Low Back Pain Q&A

  • What causes low back pain?

Low back pain can develop for many reasons. Strained muscles and tendons are a common cause of low back pain. You might overuse these tissues every day, leading to chronic aching. Or you might suffer an acute injury to your back when engaged in physical activities.

Typical causes of these types of injuries include:

    • Poor posture
    • Lifting heavy objects
    • Poor manual handling techniques
    • Exceeding fitness levels
    • Repetitive strain
    • Sudden, awkward movements

Low back pain can also be caused by:

    • Falling or tripping
    • Car accidents
    • Osteoarthritis
    • Herniated spinal discs
    • Spinal stenosis
    • Osteoporosis
    • Nerve damage

Degenerative conditions like osteoarthritis and spinal stenosis can also cause chronic back pain.

  • How can I prevent low back pain?

You can do a lot to help prevent low back pain by keeping yourself physically fit, having the correct posture, and being careful not to do more than you’re capable of. A strong, fit body is less likely to develop injuries or chronic back pain.

Practice core-strengthening exercises and stretching exercises for your hips and pelvis. Don’t slouch in your chair, and make sure your office chair is correctly adjusted. Don’t sit or stand for long periods without moving around at frequent intervals.

If you’re carrying too much weight, it can increase your risk of low back pain and make existing back problems worse. If you’re overweight, the Eckert Chiropractic, P.C. team can help with their ChiroThin weight-loss plan.

When you have low back pain, Dr. Eckert can relieve the symptoms using noninvasive methods.

  • How is low back pain treated?

If you have low back pain, you should rest your back, but don’t lie down all the time or you’ll make your back worse. Avoid the activity that caused the low back pain if you know what it was, but exercise gently to stop your body from stiffening.

Heat packs or ice packs can also help relieve pain and inflammation. If your back pain is more than a mild ache or doesn’t clear up in a few days, Dr. Eckert can assess you and provide further treatments. These could include:

    • Spinal manipulation
    • Electric muscle stimulation
    • Cryotherapy
    • Superficial heat therapy
    • Low-level laser
    • Myofascial release
    • Massage therapy
    • Rehabilitation exercises
    • Spinal traction
    • Disc demodulation
    • Theraband exercises
    • Kinesio taping
